A Journey to Pasaquan

Special Surprises

Here are some of the Special Surprises that made our trip so great:

The Third Special Surprise
3. Tom Patterson is perhaps the nation's foremost author on
self-taught and visionary artists, which is one of the fastest growing fields of interest in contemporary art circles. He is also the author of St. EOM in the Land of Pasaquan, the definitive book on Pasaquan. Tom has agreed to come to Pasaquan from his home in Winston-Salem, NC to join us for our visit. He will not only make a presentation to our group and give us an in-depth look at Pasaquan, but he has also agreed to authograph copies of his book for those of us who wish to purchase some of the few remaining copies.  And on top of that, he will be joining us for dinner on Saturday night at the Windsor Hotel, so you'll have a chance to get to know him better.

Tom is a prolific writer, critic, and curator in the visual arts and is the author of many essays and books dealing with the work of self-taught artists. He is also the U.S. editor for Raw Vision, a British-based quarterly magazine specializing in the field of “outsider” and visionary art.

H
e has lectured extensively on outsider art in the American South. Tom’s work also appears in publications such as Art Papers, the New Art Examiner, and ARTnews. He is editor of ARTVU, a sporadically published magazine of contemporary visual art in the Southeastern U.S.

Tom has served as curator for numerous groundbreaking exhibitions devoted to the work of self-taught artists at art museums throughout the U.S.  One of his latest curatorial projects was “The Wondrous World of L-15: The Multiple Arts and Personae of Bernard G. Schatz” at the Anderson Gallery of Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, last year.

His books include:
  • St. EOM in the Land of Pasaquan (Jargon Society, 1987)
  • Howard Finster, Stranger from Another World (Abbeville Press, 1989).
  • Contemporary Folk Art: Treasures From the Smithsonian American Art Museum (2001)
  • Reclamation and Transformation: Three Self-Taught Chicago Artists: David Philpot, Mr. Imagination, Kevin Orth (1994)
  • Flying Free -- Twentieth-Century Self-Taught Art from the Collection of Ellin and Baron Gordon (University of Mississippi Press- 1997)
  • A Brown's Guidebook to Atlanta (1982)
  • Àshe: Improvisation & Recycling in African-American Visionary Art (1993)
We're quite lucky to have such a star of the art world as Tom Patterson to enhance our Pasaquan experience.
