A Journey to Pasaquan

Special Surprises

Here are some of the Special Surprises that made our trip so great:

The Second Special Surprise
2. Fred C. Fussell, noted folklorist and award-winning author, is probably the person most responsible for saving Pasaquan. A long-time friend of Eddie Owens Martin ("St. EOM"), he has led the fifteen-year effort to preserve this internationally important site. Fred met with us at Pasaquan and shared his insights into St. EOM's masterpiece.  He and his wife Cathy also joined us for dinner at the Windsor Hotel on Saturday night, giving us a chance to get to know this wonderful character even better.

Fred C. Fussell is a writer, museum curator,  folklorist, photographer, and a historic preservationist. He has spent the last 30 years in the study and interpretation of the traditional folk culture of the American South. He served as the Chief Curator of the Columbus (Georgia)  Museum, and in 1996 he was employed by the Pasaquan Preservation Society as its first Director and Pasaquan's first professional staff person. Fred is now Director of the Chattahoochee Folklife Project and lives in Buena Vista, Georgia, near Pasquan.

In 1973 he was the first salaried administrator of Westville, a living history museum in nearby Lumpkin, Georgia, which replicates an 1850 west Georgia village. Westville is comprised of over thirty pre-Civil War historic buildings, moved to the site to save them from destruction. It includes everything from log cabins to large two-story homes, stores, a church, and a courthouse.

Fred has also written a number of books, including:
  •  A Chattahoochee Album: Images of Traditional People and Folksy Places Around the Lower Chattahoochee River Valley (2000)
  •  Blue Ridge Music Trails: Finding a Place in the Circle (2003), winner of the 2004 Preserve America Presidential Award for Heritage Tourism
  • Memory Paintings of an Alabama Farm: The Art and Remembrances of Jessie Dubose Rhoads, Alabama Folk Artist (1983)
We were very fortunate to have such a luminary as Fred Fussell to enhance our Pasaquan experience.
